MOLDOVAN MUSICIANS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING

IOM, Moldova, today launched a new partnership with Moldovan musicians to speak out on the dangers of human trafficking; the musicians released 30 second television and radio advertisements to be broadcast nationwide for eight weeks on Moldova National Television/Radio.

Singers Indiana, Adrian Ursu and the band "In Quadro" are featured in the television and radio spots that promote the toll free, 24/24 "La Strada" hotline and urge people to call the hotline number (0-800-77777) if they are considering going abroad. The ads begin running today.

"The aim of this advertisement is to reach the young people of Moldova, especially from the countryside, and let them know that before they go abroad they should call the "La Strada" hotline," said Indiana. "They deserve to know the risks and opportunities of going abroad."

The ads promoting the hotline, which offers objective information about going abroad, the danger of trafficking beings and consequences of illegal migration, are aimed at empowering young people to make the right decision about their future. The ads, made possible by funding from the European Union, are expected to be seen by more than 1 million people. National Television and Radio are running the advertisements free of charge.

"So many Moldovans today are making plans to go abroad in hopes of a better life," said Marielle Sander Lindstrom, IOM, Moldova, Chief of Mission. "Our message is simple: Before you go abroad, take a few minutes to call the La Strada Hotline to be sure everything is OK."

Today's announcement is in the framework of IOM's one-year counter-trafficking campaign; the centerpiece of the campaign is the feature film "Lilya 4-ever." The film has been seen by 50,000 Moldovans so far, including 100s of schools in rural areas.

Also today, IOM announced that the film will be shown on National Television on November 14th in conjunction with educational programming on the trafficking and migration issues. The showing of the movie will mark the one-year anniversary of the IOM information campaign.

"We are proud to be part of this campaign to raise the awareness of young Moldovans about the risks of trafficking, a fact which is in accordance with the status of the National Public Broadcasting Institution," said Ilie Telescu, President of "TeleRadio-Moldova" Company.
