IOM Announces New Partnership to Combat Trafficking

The International Organization for Migration, Moldova, today announced a new, historic partnership to combat human trafficking between Voxtel, Sun TV the National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings, La Strada and the U.S. State Department.

Today's announcement is in the framework of IOM's one-year counter-trafficking campaign; the centerpiece of the campaign is the feature film Lilya 4-ever, which begins its commercial premier this Friday at 5 p.m. at Patria Cinema, Stefan Cel Mare.

"This partnership marks an important turning point in our efforts to combat human trafficking," said Marielle Sander-Lindstrom, IOM, Chief of Mission Moldova. "Today marks the creation of an historic coalition of businesses and government as well as international organizations and civil society to empower a new generation of young Moldovans to fight back against the traffickers and take charge of their future."

In its support of the campaign, Voxtel General Director Francis Gelibter, announced that the mobile phone company was contributing $15,000 to IOM's anti-trafficking efforts, including $10,000 for the information campaign and $5,000 for prevention efforts.

Communications company Sun TV, Chisinau's main cable provider, also announced that it is providing 30 free 30 second advertisements on NTV, REN TV and RIF TV to promote the film.

Lilya 4-ever is an acclaimed feature film about a sixteen year old girl who dreams of a better life but becomes a victim of human trafficking. The film will also be shown for one week in Belti beginning February 13 and in Ungheni for a one week run beginning Feb. 20.

In addition, the film will be shown in 100 schools and boarding schools. Plans are being finalized to show the film in up to 100 Moldovan villages. The campaign is also being sponsored by the U.S. State Department and Lakarmissionen. The European Union is sponsoring an informational exhibition on display at the Patria Cinema.
