DEFINITIONS & TERMS What is trafficking?According to the UN Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, Supplementing the UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, trafficking in persons shall mean “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs." In other words, trafficking is a severe human rights violation which affects women, men and children. They can be trafficked for exploitation in the sex industry, their labor, begging, illegal adoption, false marriage, or organ removal for example. Trafficked persons are often exposed to physical and psychological abuses, denied basic rights and freedom and medical care, considered as illegal or irregular migrants in the country of destination, and can be found in forced and unwanted relationships of dependency with their traffickers or other persons. What is domestic violence?Domestic violence involves physical, sexual, emotional or financial abuse between people who have or had a relationship, between family members. It can be directed towards women, men and children, regardless of age, educational background or race. Victims often feel humiliated, frightened, ashamed, alone or confused. According to our statistics, 85% of the women and girls trafficked from Moldova were victims of domestic violence before their trafficking experience. The situation of abuse at home is a push factor for taking the decision to migrate at all costs, including taking the risk of being trafficked. That is why raising awareness on domestic violence and helping victims of domestic violence, is a priority and part of our preventing measures in counter-trafficking activities.
